MADISON, SD (KELO) – DSU doctoral student Dylan Johnson started brewing beer about four years ago.

“I went on a whim like, ‘You know what? It sounds like something that would be pretty fun, ”said entrepreneur Dylan Johnson.

Add his friend and fellow DSU graduate Jarod Keene to the equation, and it’s a recipe for business.

The two men want to open a taproom microbrewery in Madison.

“We have the space allocated; we start working on some first few beers for what we want to show people, and we start picking what the area likes other places, the breweries in Sioux Falls, the breweries in Minnesota, things like that, ”a said entrepreneur Jarod Keene.

While Keene says he’s always had a level of interest in starting a business, he says the duo lacked foundation.

“We didn’t know where our fundraiser was? Where are we going to put our assets? How do you make sure you have an exit strategy? What is our business plan? Keene said.

Fortunately, DSU’s Paulson Cyber ​​Incubator and Entrepreneurial Center has helped answer these questions.

The space is designed to help students, faculty, staff, and the public start and grow businesses in Madison and the state.

“It’s best to start a business with some planning and do what we call customer discovery, get out of the building and talk with real potential customers to understand what their issues are to make sure you are creating the solution to this problem, ”said DSU Director of Economic Development Katherine Cota.

And Johnson is thrilled that the company is pouring into Madison’s business community.

“Madison is growing up pretty fast. We’re getting more and more businesses every day, and I think it’s really exciting to be a part of it, ”Johnson said.

The center is named after DSU alumnus and entrepreneur Matt Paulson.

He and his wife donated $ 300,000 to the project.
