Landrieu Digs In On Advocacy Nomination
Mar 29th, 2010 | By dawnriversbaker | Category: Politics & PolicyCongressional Republicans have been indulging in a few schoolyard antics that we parents might use as examples to our children of poor sportsmanship, conduct that undesirable and not to be emulated. For example, thanks to the arcane rules of the Senate, Republicans brought the work of that body to a halt last Wednesday by refusing a procedural unanimous consent agreement. That meant, among other things, that the SBA budget hearing, which had been canceled because of the snow and rescheduled, will have to be rescheduled again. Then there is the matter of Presidential nominations.
We have been waiting for Dr. Winslow Sargeant to be confirmed as Chief Counsel of the SBA Office of Advocacy since his nomination was approved by the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship last September. Now, it seems that Committee’s Chair, Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA), has grown tired of waiting. She took to the Senate floor last week to ask for unanimous consent that the Senate consider and approve the appointment. As expected, there was an objection, voiced by Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) on behalf of some anonymous Republican who evidently is dissatisfied with Dr. Sargeant’s qualifications. It doesn’t end there; Senator Landrieu has promised to bring the nomination to the floor daily, following the current recess, until it is acted upon.
