Small Business Needs Voice On The Inside

Jan 26th, 2009 | By Dawn R. Rivers | Category: Politics & Policy

It has been kind of interesting to watch the scramble in the small business community for some sort of a nod from the incoming Obama Administration. One can cite any number of reasons for all the yelling, from the degree to which small business is starved for White House attention to the fear that the federal government will manage to spend upwards of $1 trillion on economic recovery and still leave them out.

Perhaps the greatest obstacle to any sort of focus on small business policy by the Obama Administration is that small business does not seem to be integrated into the economic universe of Obama’s top economic advisors. Someone needs to clearly illustrate to those advisors (with visual aides including arrows and stick figures, as needed) the various contributions of small businesses of all firm size classes to the overall economy. That will be among the tasks awaiting our as-yet-unconfirmed SBA Administrator, Karen Gordon Mills. The question many are asking is whether she will be in place in time to advocate for small business policy in the recovery bill? No wonder the small business community is nervous.
