R3 Limps Into The New Year

The SBA Office of Advocacy announced last week that it had received thirty-eight nominations of burdensome regulations during the second round of its Regulatory Review and Reform (r3) initiative. That’s quite a drop from the first round, during which there were 83 nominations – more than double this year’s turnout. That almost certainly had to have been a disappointment — although, of course, you can’t expect anybody to actually come out and say so. Instead, Advocacy issued a statement touting the ‘strong response’ of the small business community.

Only ten of those submitting regulations appeared to be actual small businesses; the remaining 28 nominations were submitted by various industry and specialty organization. In addition, there have been some in the small business community who have wondered why the rules that are submitted are those that seem to impact such a small segment of all small firms. In light of the lack of enthusiasm from the small business community and the slowing of the initiative by administrators, this may turn out to be another good idea that lost critical momentum once its founder was gone.
